How to Save Money on European Train Travel

ThereByTrain has published a lot (too much?) information about whether its better to use a rail pass or separate train tickets for exploring Europe by train, but here's a very neat summary of how to save money when travelling train in Europe published by Lonely Planet.

The prices quoted are slightly out of date now, but you can trust the information, it's been written by Mark Smith, ie the Man In  Seat 61.

The PLUSES and minuses of seeing Europe by train

The SavvyBackpacker site has published a good summary of the advantages and disadvantages of exploring Europe by train.

We admit that it's slightly easier to follow than er, the weight of information, on ThereByTrain, but if this article has inspired you to see Europe from a train then you know where to go to find out the details!

10 of the best train journeys in Europe

National Geographic's pick of Top 10 European Train Trips has a mix of routes that you can easily add to a rail pass itinerary, such as the route of the Bernina Express, as well as journeys by specialist operators.

It's possible to follow all of its journeys on ordinary trains, if you're confused by how you can do that please contact us using the link at the foot of ThereByTrain.com

Some great train travel tips

If you're completely new to European rail travel, there's some great info in this article by Lani Thorpe that's been published on BootsnAll

Lonely Planet's pick of Europe's greatest train journeys

Here's Lonely Planet's pick of its Top 8 Night Train Journeys in Europe and it's choices of the  Top 10 Most Scenic railway routes in Europe, that are of course best appreciated by daylight!

I've only done four of those ten journeys, but No.s 4, 5, 8 and 9 are all on the list for next trip.

Some of Europe's best overnight train journeys

Tristan Rutherford has selected his choice of the Top 10 Best Overnight Train Trips in Europe, this is one of those articles that made me want to run to the station, despite a personal preference to only take overnight trains when it's the only practical option.

What's missing from the above is some of the practical aspects of the journeys, it's not clear whether Tristan paid the, often very expensive premium, to have a sleeping cabin to himself, or whether he was sharing a couchette with up to five other people!

Ideal bases for multiple day trips by train

ThereByTrain.com's intention is to create a directory of articles that will hopefully inspire other to travel by train in Europe, so a tad shamelessly, the first of these is an article on 'Great Bases For Day Trips By Train', written by yours truly and published on GotSaga.

Thanks again Patrica!
